Judge Matthew S. Schmidt serves as a judge of the Ross County Common Pleas Court, General & Domestic Division. He was elected to the bench in 2018, and presides over Courtroom #2.
After graduating from Chillicothe High School, Judge Schmidt received his Bachelor’s Degree from Berea College and his law degree from The University of Akron School of Law. He returned to Chillicothe following law school and began a legal career encompassing both the private and public sector. As a partner in a local law firm, his private practice included civil litigation, property law, business law, estate planning, and domestic relations. Judge Schmidt also served as an Assistant Prosecutor, Chief Deputy Prosecutor, and then for eight years as the elected Ross County Prosecuting Attorney. As a prosecutor, he successfully prosecuted numerous homicide, sexual assault, narcotics and property crime cases, and provided legal counsel to all Ross County public officials.
Judge Schmidt has served on the board of the Chillicothe Education Foundation, Adena Health Foundation, Inc., and the Chillicothe-Ross County Community Improvement Corporation. He has also served as a Junior Achievement Advisor and as a division co-chair for the Ross County United Way.
